Angola is a country in Central Africa rich in natural resources. It has large reserves of oil and diamonds, hydroelectric potential, and rich agricultural land. Despite this, Angola remains very poor, having been ravaged by a bloody civil war from 1975 to 2002.

Despite its abundant natural resources, output per capita is among the worlds lowest. Subsistence agriculture provides the main livelihood for 85% of the population. Oil production and the supporting activities are vital to the economy, contributing about 45% to GDP and 90% of exports.

The oil industry drives about half of the countrys gross domestic product and constitutes about 90 percent of its exports. Though also rich in diamonds, the great majority of the country lives in poverty. Nearly a third of all Angolans are illiterate, and many support themselves as subsistence farmers.
