Are the Amish allowed to date?

Although the typical “date” for a young Amish couple does not include going to movies, bars or dances, courtship customs have changed in the last generation or two. Much of Amish courtship ritual still centers around church and family, as it did for generations past.

Amish youth may be discreet about their dating. Dating typically begins when a young man offers a young lady a ride home after the Sunday night singing. A couple may date for a year or longer before a young man may ask for marriage. He will also seek out the blessing of her parents.
