Question: Can you contact epilepsy through kissing?

Epilepsy is being painted as a highly contagious disease. It is said to spread through saliva, urine, blood, and even faeces [7–9]. This is the reason persons with epilepsy may not get help while having a seizure. The ictal period is supposedly the stage when such a person is most infectious.

What is ictal kissing?

Ictal kissing is a very rarely observed ictal automatism described in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. We present a 62-year-old man who was referred to our epilepsy centre for comprehensive evaluation. During prolonged video-EEG monitoring, six focal-onset hyperkinetic seizures were registered.

What are simple seizures?

A partial (focal) seizure happens when unusual electrical activity affects a small area of the brain. When the seizure does not affect awareness, it is known as a simple partial seizure. Simple partial seizures can be: Motor - affecting the muscles of the body. Sensory - affecting the senses.

Where is ictal kissing part of automatism?

This rare semiological phenomenon may be considered as a temporal lobe automatism, not restricted to temporal lobe, but mainly observed in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Ictal kissing automatism is very complex in nature and most likely involves various brain networks.

Can you talk while having a seizure?

People who have simple partial seizures do not lose consciousness. However, some people, although fully aware of whats going on, find they cant speak or move until the seizure is over. They remain awake and aware throughout. Sometimes they can talk quite normally to other people during the seizure.

What benefits can I claim if I have epilepsy?

Adults with epilepsy may be eligible for Social Security disability insurance (SSDI, for those who paid taxes into the Social Security system) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI, for low-income people). To qualify for either SSI or SSDI, epileptic seizures have to occur regularly (see below).
